About Susan Turner
Previously Head Gardener at Yalding Organic Gardens in the U.K., South-African born Susan Turner is now Head Gardener at Ballymaloe House as well as Ballymaloe Cookery School Gardens. An expert in her field, she has worked extensively in Israel and Germany as well as her native South Africa and brings a wealth of experience to bear on her series of gardening workshops. Susan is extremely knowledgable on all aspects of organic horticulture and has been lecturing since 1995.
"My passion for organic gardening started in Israel where I grew commercial tomatoes, peaches and mangoes organically. I then went on to study organic horticulture at Moulton College, Northamptonshire and afterwards became the Head Gardner at Yalding Organic Gardens, employed by Garden Organic, the National Charity for organic growing in the UK. Here we developed a 10 acre bare field into 15 different display gardens and wildlife habitats. I was also able to develop further my interests in garden history, working alongside the Heritage Seed Library and the Garden History Museum in London. Working alongside other designers, my interest in herbaceous perennials and ornamental design developed too. I was offered the position of head gardener at Ballymaloe Cookery School fourteen years ago. My work here in Ireland has also included lecturing at various colleges and garden design, both on commercial and domestic scale."
